Galax Begins Plans for Centennial Celebration

2006 will mark the 100th birthday of the City of Galax. As this milestone approaches local citizens would like to make the occasion one to remember through celebratory events and commemorative activities.

Committee meetings began in October of 2003 with brainstorming sessions and ideas for a year-long celebration which will include several legacy events. The year of celebration will culminate with a special kick-off event in June 2006 that will look to the future of Galax.

The Centennial Celebration of 2006 falls just one year before the entire nation will come together for atribute to Virginia--our nation's birthplace. December 1606 marks the date that the three English ships embarked upon a treacherous journey--a journey launched as a business venture in hopes of creating unlimited opportunity in a new world for all who dared to share such a dream. Four and a half months later, in May 1607, the English explorers finally found safe harbor at Jamestown, Virginia.

The City of Galax has been invited to participate in the 2 year long series of statewide and national commemorative events and programs by the Jamestown 2007 Foundation. This allows the City the opportunity to use our Centennial Celebration events as part of this national event. The events in Galax will lead us up to the opening of the Jamestown 2007 Celebration. Galax has been designated as an official Virginia 2007 Community. By tagging onto this statewide and national commemoration of Virginia's 400th anniversary the spotlight will shine on our hometown. As an offical Virginia 2007 Community this offers Galax the opportunity to co-brand our Centennial events and activities leading into the 2007 event and tag on to a national marketing campaign promoting events across the state of Virginia.

Co-chairs of the Galax Centennial Celebration are Laura Bryant, Penny Moseley, and Debbie Robinson. After meeting with the steering committe on November 6, 2003, the committee unanimously voted to participate in the statewide event. The committee has begun to plan legacy events for the 2006 Centennial which will lead into Virginia's 2007 Celebration.

Proposed legacy events include a Kick-off celebration during the Galax Leaf & String Festival in June 2006, a sculpture with significant commemoration, a community mural and a drama/play portraying historical events and people of the area.

During the twelve months following the kick-off event, community organizations, non-profit, cultural, businesses, civic clubs, neighborhoods and churches will be encouraged to co-brand their normally held annual events as part of the Centennial Celebration, and also the 400th Anniversary of our nation's birthplace.

Events and organizations receiving sanction status will be given authorization to use the offical City of Galax Cntennial logo and theme. Centennial events activities and exhibits should provide the opportunity to instill a sense of pride in local residents; to increase regional awareness of the community; and to celebrate our quality of life.

The Galax Centennial Committee wil work to organize and present a community celebration comprised of events, activities and exhibits that honor our past, celebrate the present and imagine the future.
